As a travel nurse, I’ve had the unique opportunity to explore various destinations while pursuing my passion for healthcare. Among the many places I’ve roamed, Playa del Rey holds a special place in my heart. This enchanting beachside community, nestled in the heart of Los Angeles, offers a delightful blend of coastal beauty, vibrant culture, and a tight-knit community. However, there’s one caveat – the absence of air conditioning in the hospital where I work, but that is in Culver city.  

Paradise by the Ocean:

Playa del Rey, translated as “Beach of the King,” is a hidden gem tucked away from the bustling city vibes of LA. The moment I stepped foot on the sandy shores, I knew I’d found my oasis. The stunning sunsets, gentle ocean breeze, and soothing sound of waves crashing on the shore welcomed me home after long shifts at the hospital.

Exploring Nature’s Bounty:

The beauty of Playa del Rey extends beyond its beaches. The nearby Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve offers a sanctuary for wildlife and bird enthusiasts. I’ve spent leisurely mornings strolling along the hiking trails, spotting rare migratory birds and appreciating the marshlands’ tranquility.

Close-Knit Community:

One of the highlights of living in Playa del Rey is the sense of community that thrives here. The locals are warm, friendly, and genuinely welcoming. I quickly found myself making friends with fellow nurses and locals at the neighborhood coffee shop, bonding over shared stories and laughter.

A Quaint Abode:

Renting in Playa del Rey has been a delightful experience. The charming beach houses and cozy apartments lend a unique coastal vibe to my living space. My favorite pastime is enjoying a cup of coffee on my balcony, basking in the ocean breeze, and planning my next beach adventure.

The AC Dilemma:

Of course, no paradise is perfect, and my hospital has a quirk – a lack of air conditioning. The hot summer days can be challenging, but the camaraderie among staff members and our dedication to patient care keep us going. We’ve developed creative ways to keep cool, including impromptu ice cream runs and rotating fan duty during breaks.

Embracing the Adventure:

As a travel nurse, I’ve learned to embrace the challenges that come with each new location. The minor discomfort of the AC-less hospital is outweighed by the joy of living in Playa del Rey. The ability to enjoy the beach, explore nature, and connect with a community of like-minded individuals has made this experience truly rewarding.
